Company Updates Giving Back

January 22nd marks the birthday of the late artist and musician Daniel Johnston. Daniel is known around the world not only for his unique talents in music and illustration, but also for his openness with his mental health journey. Daniel’s story has inspired open conversation about mental wellness around the world – let’s celebrate his legacy together!

2020 has been a year of change, to say the least. In order to be as safe and smart as possible in light of Covid-19, instead of the Hi, How Are You Project’s annual concert, Hi, How Are You Day will take the form of a HAPPY HABIT-A-THON; a largely virtual and social media driven multi-day event on and around Hi, How Are You Day (January 22nd). By reinforcing the effectiveness and ease of the original Happy Habits through a set of healthy, fun, and engaging activities, the Hi, How Are You Project is dedicated to furthering its mission to reduce the stigma around mental health, encourage conversation, and connect communities around the world.

Join in the Fun!

Calling all musicians and artists! As part of the celebration of Hi, How Are You Day, we want you to join in the fun. Throughout his life, Daniel Johnston expressed himself through art and music, so in honor of his legacy, we're asking students across the country to send in their art or music that speaks to their mental health journey! On January 22nd, we'll hold a drawing of all entrants – winners will receive a package of all kinds of Hi, How Are You giveaways, and their art and music will be featured on the Hi, How Are You website, Youtube and social platforms!

How to participate (as a musician):

Send a Direct Message to the American Campus Communities Instagram account @americancampus with your performance of a Daniel Johnston song or an original song that speaks to you and your mental wellness journey!

How to participate (as an artist):

Send a Direct Message to the American Campus Communities Instagram account @americancampus with your artwork -- could be a drawing, painting, sculpture, knitting, or any piece of your own creation – that speaks to you and your mental wellness journey!

Let's celebrate the importance of mental health together by getting creative! And remember -- mental health matters. We can all make a difference in the lives of friends, family and loved ones, starting with just four little words: Hi, how are you?
